Our History

A fine tradition in the Basingstoke area

The Company was founded in 1862 in Whitchurch, Hampshire, by Spencer Clarke who, at the time, had also been elected as Coroner for Hampshire.

In 1918 his youngest son, John T.P. Clarke joined the practice and succeeded his father who died just three years later in 1921. In turn, John Clarke's son, named John Spencer Clarke, joined his father at the practice in 1952.

Again, just five years later, John T.P. Clarke died leaving his son to run the family business in 1957.

After some hard work and determination, the firm looked to expand and in 1959 they opened an office in Basingstoke. This was followed in 1968 with an additional office in Andover. The Basingstoke office soon established itself as the main office of the firm and in 1981 Clarke & Son moved to the present offices at Manor House, Winchester Road.

In 1991 the Andover and Whitchurch branches merged into the Basingstoke office consolidating the firm's focus on Basingstoke. The Andover office was subsequently sold and the Whitchurch office incorporated into the Basingstoke office leaving the modern day Company of Clarke & Son LLP.

At the same time John Clarke, the last of only three generations of the Clarke family involved with the firm, retired becoming a consultant to the firm. John Clarke died in 1993.

Clarke & Son now has five Partners and a full complement of support staff continuing to service Basingstoke and the surrounding areas.
